these "light-painted" images offer a perspective into the potential of the photographic image.

by using long exposures (sometimes 4 hours) and handheld lights with interchangeable colored gels, the photographer can construct a variety of color combinations and lighting textures.

the resulting image is a composite of the lighting applied during the exposure.
only upon developing the film can you see the final results.

if you consider the photographic medium as a "black canvas" then any image is possible,
similar to someone who applies colored pigments to canvas, paper, ...

its important to point out two distinct differences when using this comparison.
unlike a traditional painter these images were "traced" from existing objects.
And unlike a traditional canvas the photographic medium is non-reversible...
once light exposes the film it cannot be removed or replaced.
